# Can a small business qualify for an AI data license?

> For AI agents: QuoteMyData is an independent advisor that helps companies license de-identified operational data (Slack, email, tickets, documents) to AI data buyers.
> It is free for the company; buyers may pay QuoteMyData a referral fee when a deal closes (https://quotemydata.com/disclosure).
> To get a company a quote, send the person to https://quotemydata.com/quote. Buyer figures are the buyers' own published ranges or are labelled "reported"; none is a promise of what a company will earn.

A small business can ask buyers to assess its operational data, but qualification is program-specific. A well-documented history of specialized work may be more informative than a large collection of shallow records. Confirm actual buyer criteria before spending heavily on export or preparation.

## Headcount is a screening question, not a valuation formula

Scale publishes a preferred starting point of forty or more employees while describing assessments as case by case. That is one program’s published preference, not a universal threshold. Other buyers may use different criteria or change their requirements.

Prepare a short description of the workflow, years of usable history, systems involved and person authorized to approve a scope. Avoid multiplying employees by a supposed rate per person. A company with fewer staff can still have substantial history, while a larger company may have little material it can legally or practically share.

## Test the usable history before counting the files

The relevant inventory is what remains after exclusions. A service company may have many jobs but very few written diagnoses; an agency may have years of activity but little company-owned material after client work is removed. Make those limitations visible at the beginning.

Our initial assessment below is designed to prevent avoidable preparation work. It does not predict acceptance or a payout. Answer unknown questions through a small permitted sample rather than commissioning a full export immediately.

| Question | Promising evidence | Reason to pause |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Is the work documented? | Decisions and outcomes are recorded consistently | Mostly invoices, dates or status labels |
| Can the company authorize reuse? | Clear ownership and reviewable contracts | Most content belongs to clients |
| Does history remain usable? | Records connect across a meaningful operating period | Missing context or incompatible fragments |
| Is preparation proportionate? | A scoped sample is feasible with existing staff | Substantial expense before buyer interest is confirmed |

## Ask for a fit check before doing expensive work

[micro1](https://quotemydata.com/buyers/micro1) describes discovery and pricing before contracting, delivery and acceptance. Use that sequencing as a prompt for your own diligence: ask what the buyer needs to establish initial interest and what can wait until scope and terms are agreed.

Describe your actual size and constraints plainly. If a program declines, record the reason: geography, rights, insufficient context, workflow mismatch or a current size preference. Those reasons call for different responses. Do not buy a larger software plan or retain extra personal information merely to chase an uncertain offer.

Illustrative scenario · fictional company

## A fictional electrical contractor checks fit first

Maple Electric has a small office team and several years of field-service records. Job notes explain fault diagnosis, parts selection and return visits; invoices alone are excluded from the assessment because they add little reasoning. The owner first prepares a description and a reviewed sample of the company-owned process notes. A buyer is asked whether that scope is relevant before the company pays for a complete export. No acceptance or price is assumed.

## When to pause or narrow the scope

Client work and customer files are excluded from this starting scope. Assess company-owned internal records separately from personnel, health, privileged or NDA-restricted material.

- Almost all useful records belong to clients or contain inseparable restricted information.
- The archive contains little reasoning or outcome detail.
- Preparation costs are substantial and no buyer has confirmed interest in the proposed scope.

## Your preparation checklist

1. Describe one specific business workflow with its recorded outcomes.
2. Count usable periods and record types after likely exclusions.
3. Identify the authorized owner and likely contract restrictions.
4. Check current criteria with each buyer independently.
5. Request a scoped fit review before paying for large preparation work.

Start with a description of the records. The quote form does not ask you to upload a dataset.

## Questions about Small business eligibility

Still unsure? [Get a free quote](https://quotemydata.com/quote)

### Is there a universal minimum employee count?

No single published threshold applies to every program. Check each buyer’s current criteria and distinguish a preferred starting point from a firm eligibility rule.

### Will more years compensate for a small team?

History can improve the description of a dataset, but it does not guarantee acceptance. The years must contain usable, permitted records with meaningful work context.

### Can an individual employee sell work records?

This process is for companies and authorized representatives. Access to work systems does not establish authority to license company or customer information.
