Can your service history explain how problems were solved?
MSPs and IT service firms run on tickets, runbooks and constant chat. The useful assessment is whether permitted records preserve a problem, the diagnostic choices and a verified outcome after client-sensitive material is excluded.
Systems to inventory
- ConnectWise, Autotask or HaloPSA
- Slack or Teams
- IT Glue or Hudu documentation
- RMM alerts
Useful context to preserve
- High-volume technical tickets with resolutions
- Runbooks paired with real incidents
- Consistent categorization
Be careful with
- Client environments and credentials must be removed
- Check client contracts for data reuse clauses
Worked example: A 55-person MSP (fictional)
Northwind IT has 7 years of ConnectWise tickets, an IT Glue knowledge base and 6 years of Slack. Client credentials and environment details are stripped, tickets from two clients whose contracts forbid reuse are excluded, and internal runbooks plus resolution notes are in scope.
When it is not worth it
- Most of your ticket content sits inside client environments you do not control.
- Client contracts broadly prohibit any secondary use of service records.

Can an MSP license client ticket data?
Client tickets require a separate rights, contract and privacy review; removing identifiers is not enough. Start with company-owned runbooks and internal process notes that can stand without client-confidential material.
